How can I tell the age of a Unitary Products air conditioner or heat pump from the serial number?
Saturday, April 20, 2019
CE proudly distributes the Carrier, Bryant & Payne brands of HVAC systems, as well as a full-line of aftermarket parts, supplies & accessories. If the boiler was manufactured from 1984 to 1999, the serial number ends in a four digit date code. “1” would be manufactured in December, 1984. If the boiler was manufactured from 2000 to present, the serial number ends in a six digit date code. “105” would be manufactured in May, 2005. Tips for better search results. Ensure correct spelling and spacing - Examples: 'paper jam' Use product model name: - Examples: laserjet pro p1102, DeskJet 2130 For HP products a product number.
There are two different serial number formats for Unitary Products. Up until 2004, the third letter of the serial number was used to denote year of manufacture by the letter code below:
A = 1971, 1992. B = 1972, 1993
C = 1973, 1994. D = 1974, 1995
E = 1975, 1996. F = 1976, 1997
G = 1977, 1998. H = 1978, 1999
J = 1979, 2000. K = 1980, 2001
L = 1981, 2002 M = 1982, 2003
N = 1983, 2004 P = 1984
R = 1985 S = 1986 T = 1987
V = 1988. W = 1989. X = 1990
Y = 1991
So the serial number below indicates that it was manufactured in 1996, based on condition of the unit.
From 2004 to the present, the first two numbers in the serial number, located at the second and fourth characters, are the year of manufacture. So this serial number shows that it was manufactured in 2009.

I tried looking at a couple of guides to tell the age but it didn't match up (Payne). If i look under Bryant, it indicates the units are from 2002, 3rd and 4th digit '02'. The units look older to me.
Determining Air Conditioning Age & Capacity-Reprinted
Day-Night - Later manufactured as 'BDP' (Bryant, Day-Night, Payne)
Capacity: Look for those elusive two digits in the model number (usually, but not
always) divisible by 6 and divide by 12 to convert to tons. It is often in the last three to
five digits, but is sometimes closer to the middle.
Age: First two letters of the serial number indicate age, where the
first letter is the month and the second letter the year of manufacture
beginning with 1970
A=1970
B=1971
C=1972
Bryant
Capacity: Look for those elusive two digits in the model number usually (but not always)
divisible by 6 and divide by 12 to convert to tons.
Example: 56BAB0042000A0
42 = size on thousands of BTU
42,000 Btu = 3½ ton
From 1964 through 1979 Bryant encoded age information in the
serial number with the first two digits indicating week of
manufacture and the letter following those first two numbers
indicating the year beginning R = 1964:
R = 1964
S = 1965
T = 1966
U = 1967
V = 1968
W = 1969
X = 1970
Y = 1971
A = 1972
B = 1973
C = 1974
D = 1975
E = 1976
F = 1977
G = 1978
H = 1979
In subsequent years Bryant simplified its system where, the first two digits of serial
number = Week of manufacture.
Third & fourth digits = Year of manufacture.
Example: 3188XXXXXX = 31st week of 1988.
Thanks!
